The Dell Inspiron One 2020 (Touch) AIO comes in four variants each having slightly different internal components but similar bundle of wireless keyboard and mouse |
The Inspiron One 2020 as the name suggests has a 20-inch diagonal screen and the monitor comes attached to the stand out of the box, which simplifies the setup process. The One 2020 has a glossy black back which tends to bulge out towards the centre. There is a rectangular groove at the bottom right hand corner for the USB 2.0 ports, LAN port and the power input. The square base of the stand is quite sturdy and has a matte black finish. The neck holding the AIO is angular and allows the monitor to be tilted 21 degrees backwards and 5 degrees forward.
Most of the front portion is covered by glass and there is a small plastic section which houses the speakers. The speaker section is located on the base and they drive the sound downwards. There is an equally thick bezel running around the monitor which provides sufficient space for all the Windows 8 edge gestures. On the left hand side you have three buttons on the top which control the on-screen display (OSD) followed by the audio and microphone jacks, USB 2.0 ports and an SD card slot. On the right hand edge you have the power button and a DVD-drive on the top. The overall build quality of the AIO is impressive but the touchscreen and the glossy back is a fingerprint magnet.
The AIO bundles in a wireless keyboard and mouse combo. Both of them work on two AA batteries provided in the bundle. The mouse opens from the top to show the battery section and there is a magnetic implementation to lock it firmly. The two AA batteries give the hefty mouse some weight, which may or may not be liked by many. The buttons are quite responsive and have an audible clicking sound. The keyboard has flat-topped keys arranged in a chiclet fashion and have a decent amount of travel.
On the left hand side you have the buttons for OSD menu, audio and mic jacks, two USB 2.0 ports and an SD card slot |
The Dell Inspiron AIO 2020 houses an Intel Ivy Bridge Core i3-3240T which is a dual-core hyper-threaded processor clocked at 2.9GHz. It has integrated Intel HD 2500 graphics. There is 4GB of DDR3 RAM clocked at 1600MHz and a 1TB hard drive. It comes bundled with a Windows 8 64-bit OS. The capacitive touchscreen monitor has a resolution of 1600x900 and is capable of detecting upto 10 fingers. With on-board Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, webcam, SD card slot, DVD writer and wireless keyboard and mouse it may seem to tick all the boxes as far as features are concerned, but there is one glaring omission. The Dell AIO 20 lacks USB 3.0 ports and has five USB 2.0 ports instead. An AIO not having a single USB 3.0 port in its 2013 model is just plain surprising considering most external drives selling in the market these days are USB 3.0 ones. It comes with a 15-month subscription of McAfee security suite and a one-year home phone support warranty.
The touchscreen response is smooth and there wasn’t any noticeable lag. It’s great if you are using the tile interface but on the desktop mode you are better off with a mouse and a keyboard. The only exception is when you are browsing through your photographs which just feels natural with a touch interface. We noticed that using the touchscreen for a prolonged period of time led to a tingling pain near the elbow as it is stretched out without any support.
Coming to the benchmarks, PC Mark 7 gave an overall score of 2815 and Cinebench R11.5’s multi-core rendering score was around 2.32. It took 76 seconds to zip a 100MB file with 256-bit encryption, 57 seconds to encode a 1 min MPEG video to x.264. Resident Evil 5 gave a decent 31.4 FPS at a resolution of 1280x720 at medium settings. Considering it has a Core i3 processor, its performance is not the best we have seen in an AIO, but it manages to get the work done. It had no issues playing back HD videos. Its audio though loud, does not impress when it comes to sound separation when several instruments are playing at the same time. The lack of USB 3.0 ports is a big negative on this other-wise average performer.
Verdict and Price in India
The Dell Inspiron 2020 AIO comes at a price tag of Rs 45,090 which we feel is a lot to pay for something that is pretty basic. The non-touchscreen model which sells for Rs 36,090 offers a comparatively better price proposition, as let's face it - there’s only so much you can do with a touchscreen on your 20-inch monitor before uneasiness settles in. The system specs are ideal for a home or small office setup where space is at a premium. In terms of work applications, it is targeted clearly at users who do most of their work within the Office suites, surf the web and want to watch HD movies on the side. It can support older games at lower resolutions if you get the itch to play games, but it is primarily an entry-level system. Paying close to a Rs 10,000 premium for the touchscreen just doesn’t seem right. If you must get a touchscreen AIO, we suggest you wait it out till the pricing is sub-40k.
